Designs on city growth

Moving the multidisciplinary design studio Shellshock Inc. to Providence last August, after two years in Boston, has helped the company grow, founder Mark Mason said.

“I didn’t see the value of being in a location with a lot of congestion and competition,” Mason said. “The thing I really like about Providence [is] the resources. There’s a lot of talent in this city that I can employ. And it’s inexpensive compared to other cities.”

Mason, also art director, started the business after working as a designer for Web-design and e-commerce agencies. He’s developed a “one-stop-shop” marketing firm that does print work, full branding, logos, Web design, apps and coding.

Shellshock has three employees besides Mason, plus five subcontractors. The firm is projected to earn up to $300,000 this year, Mason said.

The firm is based at 244 Weybosset St. in the Hatch Entrepreneurial Center.

“Our target market is the tech and education industry and any client that views design aesthetic as an important element,” Mason added. •
