Developers flock to Mass. wind farm projects

BOSTON – Ten developers are interested in building wind farms off the coast of Massachusetts. According to the Boston Globe, these farms could generate nearly 10 times more energy than the long-stalled Cape Wind project.

The farms would be built roughly 14 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard in a 1,160-square mile expanse of federal water’s identified by the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

After more than two years in talks with local and state officials, fishermen, environmentalists and tribal leaders, the bureau refined the boundaries in the so-called wind energy area last week from 3,000-square miles to 1,160-square miles, according to the Globe.

Officials estimate that the wind farms could power as many as 1.7 million homes, according to the Globe, but that construction would not start for several years.
