Dice: Linux demand on the rise

“IN THE last 10 years, there’s been no tech skill that matches Linux in terms of growth in hiring requests and size of demand, and clearly it’s not done,” said Alice Hill, managing director of Dice.com.

NEW YORK – Eight of every 10 recruiters say hiring Linux professionals is a priority in 2012, according to the “first-ever” report forecasting the Linux job market.

The survey, released Feb. 14, compiles the answers of more than 2,000 hiring managers. Career website Dice and The Linux Foundation conducted the survey.

“In the last 10 years, there’s been no tech skill that matches Linux in terms of growth in hiring requests and size of demand, and clearly it’s not done,” said Alice Hill, managing director of Dice.com.

“The best Linux candidates have options, and we need more talented professionals to join the community. Linux is simply a core skill for anyone pursuing a career in software development or systems administration,” Hill said.

The report found: 47 percent of hiring managers expect to hire more Linux professionals in 2012; 63 percent found that Linux hires are increasing relative to jobs created in other skills areas.

Also, 85 percent reported that they had difficulty finding qualified Linux professionals. The hiring managers also said that their “most-sought” professionals have three to five years of experience, especially with development or systems administration skills.
