Did lawmakers make the right move in legalizing handheld-fireworks sales in R.I.?

Posted 6/28/10

PROVIDENCE – A new state law allows the sale of handheld fireworks to anyone 16 years of age or older in Rhode Island. Only four states, including Massachusetts, still ban fireworks.

Businesses began selling fireworks within days of the new law’s enactment.

Some state and local fire officials, however, have complained the new law, which does not permit the use of indoor pyrotechnics, was approved too quickly. Indoor pyrotechnics are covered under existing regulations.

What do you think of the new law?

Who decided on 16 years old as the age for purchasing fireworks? Are they really spending time on legalizaing fireworks with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country? The General Assembly should clear it's plate of everything but getting Rhode IsIanders back to work.

Ditto to Carol's comment above. This was a true boneheaded move by the RI Legislature! What was the point exactly? If we blow off our fingers we'll forget that we don't have jobs....?

Our tag line should be switched from "The Ocean State," to "The Dumb State." All fireworks are dangerous. Why encourage anyone to play with fire? And it'll be mostly kids who get hurt. A fireman I talked with today said they are all concerned about the increased number of fires they be called to and additional number of burn victims their EMTs will have to treat. Knowing this state, undoubtedly some legislator(s) got paid off to push the fireworks bill through to benefit the United Fireworkers Union.
