NEWPORT – The board of trustees of the Newport Art Museum has appointed Norah Diedrich as its new executive director.

Diedrich was previously the executive director of the Evanston Art Center in Evanston, Ill.

Diedrich, an arts educator and photographer, becomes the fifth salaried director of the museum, succeeding Elizabeth Goddard, who retired in February.

She was one of two finalists among more than 100 applicants in a nationwide search.

“I’m honored to be selected as the executive director of the Newport Art Museum. This organization has inspired and supported artists from Rhode Island and the region for over a century,” Diedrich said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the dedicated board, staff, supporters, artists and collectors, to chart the museum’s course for growth and sustainability.”

Said Sandra Craig, president of the Newport Art Museum’s board of trustees, “We trust under Deidrich’s leadership, museum programming will be enhanced, serve increased and diverse audiences, expand membership and appeal to multiple constituency groups – young and old, baby boomers and their grandkids. We count on Diedrich to build upon long-standing collaborative relationships with local nonprofits and state-wide arts organizations.”

During her five-year tenure at the Evanston Art Center, Diedrich led the organization through a strategic planning process, as well as the purchase of a new facility and its interior renovation. She also led a $2.5 million capital campaign.

The Newport Art Museum, founded in 1912, is at 76 Bellevue Ave.
