NEWPORT – Ten organizations are receiving a total of $45,000 in 2014 Doris Duke Fund for Historic Preservation grants through the Newport Restoration Foundation.

The 8th annual awards ceremony held on Sept. 5 raised the funds, which will be distributed to civic groups and nonprofits on Aquidneck Island and in Jamestown for bricks-and-mortar projects or project planning.

“While the preservation awards recognize complete restoration projects, they have allowed us the opportunity to support smaller scale projects within our community,” said Pieter N. Roos, executive director of the foundation. “Historic properties are costly to maintain. By helping to fund isolated projects we have been able to give back in a way that helps support the historic fabric of Newport.”

Next celebrated on Sept. 11, the awards program is a joint project of the foundation and the city of Newport.
