ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE, DIVISION OF GENERAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – University Medicine
AGE: 35

Why did you select your profession?
I was fortunate to have a wonderful role-model physician in my mother. Academic general internal medicine is the right fit as a career because I love taking care of the “whole” person as a primary care physician and hospitalist, and I find teaching incredibly rewarding.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Say yes to most requests. … Everyone has to say “no,” but I think saying “yes” helped me figure out what aspects of my career were incredibly important to me as well as those that had little impact on my career path.

What advice would you give your 22-year-old self?
Take time to decompress from difficult situations early.

What is your favorite Rhode Island escape or hobby?
I love cycling on the beautiful bike paths during the spring, summer and autumn.

How do you keep a work-life balance?
A successful balance comes from pairing those activities that keep me well, like healthy eating and exercise, with time to indulge in my guilty pleasures, like baking and pop-culture trivia.
