PBN: Tell us a little bit about “Beauty is Power.”

SZTULMAN: In our culture, beauty is powerful: it opens doors not only to personal, but also to professional opportunities. Being beautiful is being empowered: it instills power, strength, vitality and confidence, and it affects how the world sees us. The book reveals how Brazilians see beauty, health and youthfulness as marks of respect, not only for themselves but for everyone in their circles and also for the culture as a whole. Beauty is seen as a holistic triangle with beauty and health being the sides, and youthfulness being the base. Inner and outer cultural beauty secrets are uncovered.

PBN: What inspired you to publish a book, and how did your Brazilian background contribute?

SZTULMAN: I grew up in Brazil, and that’s where I learned the value, benefit and importance. I saw beautiful people – of both sexes – but also of all ages and sizes, people rich and poor, taking pride in themselves and showing that in the way they dressed, worked, played, even slept. Brazilians have known for literally ages that beauty, health and youthfulness were well within the reach of everyone, not just those stereotypical gorgeous, young women and men who populate its beaches.

PBN: You mentioned that your book’s theme focuses on the positives of Brazilian culture. Can you elaborate on this?

SZTULMAN: Research has demonstrated that the lack of a positive attitude is associated with an inability to flourish. Positive attitude is the way of life (for most) in the Brazilian culture. •
