Kent Dresser was recently appointed executive director of Clean The Bay, a Rhode Island-based nonprofit. He brings to his role more than 20 years of maritime-industry experience, including 14 years serving as a captain for Safe/Sea. Dresser is the founder and president of Confident Captain/Ocean Pros., a maritime training facility in Newport. He holds a bachelor’s degree in coastal and marine-policy studies from the University of Rhode Island as well several professional certifications.
PBN: Will the organization grow?
DRESSER: Clean The Bay is an environmental nonprofit organization that specializes in removing large debris from the shoreline. We are equipped with a mechanized fleet of landing craft, a hard-working team of volunteers and an ambitious staff. Clean The Bay has removed thousands of tons of debris since its founding five years ago.
As executive director, I look forward to further expanding not only our physical abilities to remove debris from the shore, but also our abilities to engineer and document effective ways for other agencies worldwide to remove debris from their shorelines.
PBN: What are some goals you hope to achieve as executive director of Clean The Bay?
DRESSER: Rhode Island is a world leader in many different aspects of the marine industry. I hope to help steer Clean The Bay in such a direction that we can be a model worldwide for debris removal and shoreline cleanup. Rhode Island is the ideal location to house such an operation because of its diverse coast and geography as well as its world-class maritime infrastructure and industry. … Future generations are relying on us to harness the potential that our waterways and our people have to make a better environment for tomorrow. Clean The Bay has the ability to do just that.
PBN: How will you balance your current position with your new role as Clean The Bay’s executive director?
DRESSER: I expect Clean The Bay to benefit from being housed in our current infrastructure. The synergies between Confident Captain/Ocean Pros and its staff and clientele and Clean The Bay are ideal. •
