PROVIDENCE – The director of the R.I. Department of Health, Dr. Michael Fine, will lead a Rhode Island healthcare and life science trade mission to Israel in November, the Health Department and the R.I. Economic Development Corporation announced on Tuesday.
Fine has requested that the EDC develop and manage the trade mission along with the R.I. Department of Administration, Nevel International LLC, the John H. Chafee Center for International Business at Bryant University, the Consulate General of Israel to New England, Government of Israel Economic Mission to North America and the U.S. Commercial Service.
“With this trip we look beyond our borders to identify opportunities for Rhode Island businesses to expand and increase employment,” Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee said in a statement. “Establishing stronger ties between Rhode Island and Israel will provide new growth and joint research opportunities for Rhode Island companies.”
In 2011 the EDC led a similar trip to Israel resulting in more than $5 million in export sales, research agreements and academic partnerships for Rhode Island institutions and businesses.
The November mission is intended to grow Rhode Island’s healthcare and life science oriented exports to Israel as well as to cultivate R&D partnerships in those fields.
The trip will feature meetings with Ministry of Health, Industry and Trade Labor officials as well members of Israeli healthcare and life service companies. There will also be visits to medical facilities and schools and life science incubators, according to a release.
Israel hosts approximately 1,000 life science companies and 400 medical device companies. 80 new companies are launched in the country each year.
EDC Executive Director Marcel A. Valois said Israeli healthcare and life science industries offer “vast potential” for Rhode Island business exports.
