PROVIDENCE – Patricia M. Page, a business and computer education teacher at East Greenwich High School, was named the 2014 Rhode Island Teacher of the Year at a surprise ceremony Thursday morning.

Page, who has taught at the high school for three years, now becomes a candidate for 2014 National Teacher of the Year.

“Patricia Page, who brings into the classroom the knowledge and skills from her background as a corporate and technical trainer, has led her students to success in state and national finance and investment-writing competitions,” said Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee in prepared remarks. “One of her goals is to ‘break down the wall’ between our schools and the world of business, which surely helps prepare her students for success in challenging careers.”

Others in attendance at the event included Eva-Marie Mancuso, chair of the Board of Education; Deborah A. Gist, commissioner of elementary and secondary education; and Timothy Chase, assistant principal at East Greenwich High School.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Inskip’s Warwick Automall awarded Page a Smart electric drive car for her use during her time as Teacher of the Year.

“Time and time again, I have seen [Page] reach out to the student who feels like he cannot do anything right and help him to feel more special, smarter or more insightful,” said Ella Myette, one of Page’s students, in a press release issued by the education department.

Page, who lives in East Greenwich, first worked at East Greenwich High School seven years ago, as a coordinator who helped develop performance-based graduation requirements like the senior project. She taught third grade for two years at Meadowbrook Farms Elementary School, and moved to her current position at the high school three years ago.

At the high school, she has led her students to a top-five placement in the InvestWrite financial/investment writing competition, and to the finals in the R.I. LifeSmarts and the Federal Reserve Cup Challenge competitions.

Page holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and communication from Bryant University, a master’s in business administration from Providence College and a master’s in teaching from Roger Williams University.
