EAST PROVIDENCE – Starkweather & Shepley Insurance Brokerage Inc. climbed 18 spots on Business Insurance Magazine’s Top 100 list of the nation’s insurance brokers for 2010.
The firm was No. 74, up from 92nd on the list compiled by Crain Communications Inc. based on 2009 revenue.
Starkweather & Shepley’s revenue improved to $32.49 million last year, a 15 percent increase the firm attributed to a record number of new business writings, acquisitions, client retention as well as streamlining. Because property and casualty rates remain largely unchanged, Starkweather & Shepley said it has diversified to group health benefits, defined-contribution retirement planning and voluntary-benefit products to grow revenue.
“The ability to succeed in a tough climate says a lot about our employees,” Natale P. Calamis, Starkweather and Shepley president and CEO, said in a statement. •
