EPA orders AVX to clean up New Bedford Harbor

Posted 4/20/12

NEW BEDFORD – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered AVX Corp. to remove PCB-contaminated sediment from New Bedford Harbor, according to the Boston Business Journal.

From the 1940’s to the 1970’s, an electrical capacitor, owned and operated by AVX’s predecessor Aerovox Corp., discharged hazardous wastes into the Harbor.

Following a lawsuit, the EPA ordered AVX to pay clean up costs and at the close of 2011, $456 million had been spent on the cleanup.

The EPA estimates that it could cost the Greenville, S.C.-based company an additional $401 million, according to the news agency.
