BOSTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $200,0000 brownfields cleanup grant to the city of New Bedford.

The grant, announced Tuesday, will be used to clean up and redevelop a former gasoline filling station and car service garage that operated between 1915 and the late 1970’s.

“Not only will this grant make our city cleaner, it will help revitalize a neighborhood,” New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said in a statement. “The city is grateful to have partnered with the EPA on this important investment in New Bedford.”

The $200,000 is part of more than $17 million in EPA brownfields investments across the six New England states.

The grants are designed to protect health and the environment, create jobs and promote economic re-development in American communities, according to an EPA release.

This year, in Massachusetts alone, the EPA is providing $6.75 million in 33 separate brownfields grants to communities across the state.

“EPA brownfields funding helps strengthen the economic foundation and is a catalyst for further growth in our communities,” Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA New England’s office, said in prepared remarks.

“Cleaning and revitalizing contaminated sites helps create jobs, and can help a community to create new businesses and neighborhood centers, while making our environment cleaner and the community healthier,” added Spalding.

The EPA estimates that there are 450,000 abandoned and contaminated waste sites in the United States. In 2011, the EPA’s brownfields program generated 6,447 jobs and $2.14 billion in cleanup and redevelopment funds, according to a release.
