EPA launches online tool to help consumers improve home energy efficiency

BOSTON – The federal Environmental Protection Agency has launched the new Energy Star Home Advisor, an online tool to help consumers save money and improve their homes’ energy efficiency through recommended home improvement projects, according to regional administrator Curt Spalding.
In Rhode Island, National Grid offers incentives for residential customers who purchase and implement insulation upgrades, along with HVAC equipment, appliances, pool pumps and lighting fixtures.
Some rebates are given at the time of purchase while others require a mail-in application.
Additionally, new construction programs are available to customers who build energy efficient homes according to National Grid standards. Customers can call (888) 633-7947 for information, or visit www1.nationalgridus.com/CorporateHub.
For information on additional energy efficiency and renewable energy rebates and incentives for Rhode Island residents, visit the federal Department of Energy’s Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency at http://www.dsireusa.org/.
The Energy Star Home Advisor guides homeowners through a do-it-yourself energy assessment to create home profiles of their current energy use. It then provides recommended projects and can help the user prioritize them into to-do lists to improve the home’s energy efficiency. Projects vary from quick actions like lighting and appliance upgrades, to more intensive ones like sealing air leaks and adding insulation.
Simple actions, like upgrading a bathroom showerhead to one with a WaterSense label, can save thousands of gallons of water a year and days of energy costs, Spalding said.

  1. Yes there is a natural gas shortage here that will increase electric rates by 24% BUT NG still gives away boilers and furnaces that run on natural gas. Not high efficiency either but the bottom of the rung.
