East Providence Fire gives students a lesson

Three members of the East Providence Fire Engine No. 4 recently surprised pre-K students and kindergarten students at Bay View Academy in East Providence with a lesson on fire safety.
The visit followed the completion of a unit on community helpers, which included a section on firefighters. The three volunteers from the fire department were Sharon Corriveau, Timothy Cullinan and Thomas Pereira.
Aside from getting to see the gleaming, red truck and all of its specialty equipment up close, students also had the chance to approach a fully suited firefighter. After Corriveau donned her gear, she explained its various functions before letting students ask questions and feel the material.
The exercise intended to make children feel unafraid of seeing a firefighter in full gear, in case a child were to be approached during an emergency situation, according to the department. •
