EAST PROVIDENCE – East Providence High School senior Christopher Perez-Lopes has been awarded the second annual Aspen Aerogels Technology Award.
According to a press release, Aspen’s Director of Manufacturing Gerry Simpson presented the company’s $2,000 scholarship at the annual Awards Night ceremony on June 8 to Perez-Lopes, who will be attending the University of Rhode Island in the fall.
The Technology Award was created by the energy technology company to recognize an East Providence High School senior for showing an advanced aptitude in a science or technology course.
“We wanted to commend a local student with an above-average achievement in science-based class for their hard work,” said Aspen’s finishing manager Dan O’Hara, who initiated the scholarship in cooperation with the Community Involvement Team at Aspen.
Students who applied for the award were asked to write a 500-word essay about the ability of science and technology to make the world a better place, as well as provide two letters of recommendation from teachers and guidance professionals.
The selection committee for the award at Aspen collaborated with EPHS Guidance Counselor Marshall Duran to determine the best fit for the award.
Said Duran, “We are grateful for Aspen’s commitment to the community and its future leaders. We’re hoping that this award will encourage more students like Christopher to pursue careers in science, similar to those at Aspen. We are all very proud of Christopher and wish him nothing but success.”
After graduation, Perez-Lopes plans to pursue a major in chemical engineering or a career as a chemist. He has made the honor roll every year in high school and enjoys cycling and Krav Maga, a style of self defense, in his free time.
