Ecuadorian nonprofit to mark independence

PROVIDENCE – The Asociacion Ecuatoriana de Rhode Island, a nonprofit that advocates for the Rhode Island Ecuadorian community, will celebrate 203 years of Ecuador’s emancipation at events on Aug. 10 and Aug. 11.

On Aug. 10m there will be a flag raising ceremony in at the Statehouse at 5 p.m. The ceremony will recognize the contributions of Ecuadorians to the state and seek to form a relationship between elected officials and the Ecuadorian community.

The association will present an award to Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee for his leadership and support to the Hispanic community.

On Aug. 11 there will be an Independence Dance at 8 p.m. at Eagles Club on Waterman Avenue in East Providence.

The dance will celebrate Ecuador’s independence with music and food and feature Cuban dance music.

Independence Day is celebrated on Aug. 10 to mark Ecuador’s break from Spanish rule.
