Eleanor Slater labs receive accreditation

CRANSTON – Upon completion of The Joint Commission’s survey of Eleanor Slater Hospital’s laboratories in Cranston and at the Zambarano facility in Burrillville, The Joint Commission found that the laboratories met all of the formal and official requirements for laboratory excellence. Following the accreditation activities conducted from Jan. 5-7, 2016, there were no requirements for improvement or opportunities for improvement identified by The Joint Commission.

“I am extremely pleased with the report from The Joint Commission,” said Maria Montanaro, director of the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals. “It is very rare for a laboratory survey to result in no identified requirements or opportunities for improvement. This accreditation is reflective of the commitment and dedication of Eleanor Slater Hospital staff to providing the best possible care for our patients. We continue to make significant improvements at the hospital since Governor Raimondo requested a full review of hospital operations.”

Every two years, The Joint Commission conducts unannounced surveys of all the laboratories it accredits every two years. There are 12 such laboratory accreditation requirements, and each laboratory requirement includes more than 100 standards that must be met. The laboratories serve both campuses of the 284-bed hospital, which is nearly always at capacity. The Joint Commission surveyor said she was impressed with the laboratory staff’s “attention to detail” and “focus on quality.”

The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization, accredits more than 20,000 health care organizations, including approximately 3,000 clinical laboratories. The organization has 60 years of accreditation experience across the full spectrum of health care settings.
