Elementary school lands $470K technology grant

Posted 5/8/12

PROVIDENCE – Pleasant View Elementary School has been selected to receive $470,000 through the R.I. Department of Education’s Innovation Powered by Technology Model School Grant, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist announced Monday, May 7.

The money, which will be used over two years, will train staff, open three computer labs, purchase 110 laptops for student use and extend the school day. Under the new curriculum, students at Pleasant View Elementary will spend half of their day engaged in online learning.

“To prepare our students for success in the global economy, we must encourage innovations and we must invest in technology that can advance learning and achievement,” said Chafee in prepared remarks.

As the winner of the grant, Pleasant View will become a pilot program for a statewide technology education initiative. The school will launch its updated curriculum during the 2012/2013 school year and refine the process during the 2013/2014 school year.

“Through this grant, I am confident that Pleasant View will set a model for other schools across the city to improve technology access and resources for all students,” said Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.

Through partnerships with the Capital Good Fund, Broadband Rhode Island and the EDC, Pleasant View Elementary will use technology to connect with parents in the community through free digital literacy classes and online programs.

The school will also work in partnership with the neighboring Highlander Charter School
