Emergency Cardiovascular Care Conference coming to Providence

PROVIDENCE – The American Heart Association will host the first daylong educational conference in Providence on May 12, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel. The conference will feature presentations from leading resuscitation experts on the latest in CPR and emergency cardiovascular care science, education and training. Offering attendees opportunities for networking with peers and event sponsors, the conference includes a continental breakfast, plated lunch and heart-healthy snacks; the conference fee is $200.

John Potvin, a long-term American Heart Association volunteer and East Providence Fire Department’s director of emergency medical services, is the conference’s emcee. “We are honored to host the American Heart Association’s ECC Educational Conference,” Potvin, also a Rhode Island board member and advocacy vice chairman of the AHA, said in a statement. “As an EMT, I know first-hand that timely CPR … is crucial for cardiac arrest victims. Continuous improvement of the chain of survival is vital to Rhode Islanders and all Americans.”

The conference will cover such topics as the Institutes of Medicine’s special report on cardiac arrest and AHA recommendations; tailoring teaching styles to learners; community CPR training best practices, opportunities and resources; pediatric resuscitation; AHA guidelines and product development process; and continuous quality improvement and feedback devices. The conference will also feature the story of a local cardiac arrest survivor, who will kick-off the program.
