English retailer Fat Face opens stores in Cranston, Newport

CRANSTON – The English retailer Fat Face in December opened a store at Garden City Center in Cranston, joining another store on Thames Street in Newport as among the first of its U.S. locations.

The casual, folksy brand includes clothing, shoes and accessories for men, women and children. Fat Face was founded in 1988 by two men who initially started selling T-shirts and sweatshirts and named their company for “La Face,” their favorite ski run in the French Alps, according to the U.S. website. The expansion of the company from the United Kingdom and Ireland into retail sites in the U.S. began in 2016, according to a report in The Guardian newspaper.

The Newport and Cranston locations are among four in the U.S.

Stores also are located in Portland, Maine and Lynnfield, Mass., a suburb north of Boston.
