Enrollment in schools in Bristol County, Mass., drops 12%

ONLY THREE SCHOOL DISTRICTS in Bristol County, Mass. saw student enrollment increase between 2001 and 2012 - Easton, Mansfield and North Attleboro, according to data from the Boston Business Journal.

BOSTON – Between 2001 and 2012, school enrollment in Bristol County, Mass., dropped 12.2 percent, according to data from the Boston Business Journal’s DataCenter.

In fact, between 2001 and 2012, only school districts in Easton, Mansfield and North Attleboro saw increases in enrollment.

Mansfield saw the most improvement, at 7.6 percent. Three hundred and twenty one more students enrolled in the Mansfield, Mass., school district in 2012 than did in 2001, for a total of 4,555.

The Easton school district saw a 4.3 percent, or 156-student, increase between 2001 and 2012, bringing the 2012 enrollment total up to 3,801.

North Attleboro saw its school district grow 1.2 percent between 2001 and 2012, with enrollment growing 55 students from 4,496 in 2001 to 4,551 in 2012.

Somerset, Fall River and Fairhaven saw the biggest drops in enrollment during the 11-year period, according to the BBJ data.

Somerset enrollment dropped 36.4 percent from 2001 to 2012. In 2001, the school district had 5,921 students enrolled and in 2012 4,620 students enrolled.

Fall River and Fairhaven saw 18.8 and 14.8 percent decreases, respectively, from 2001 to 2012. The city of Fall River saw student enrollment fall by 2,237 to 9,654 in 2012, and Fairhaven lost 333 students, totaling 1,919 in 2012.

BBJ’s data from Bristol County, Mass., did not include the towns of Dighton, Freetown, Raynham or Rehoboth.
