Fall River privatizes trash collection

FALL RIVER – A private company began collecting city trash this month, after a Superior Court judge denied a request for a temporary restraining order to halt the beginning of Mayor Jasiel Correia II’s privatization of the service.

EZ Disposal Service, of Revere, began trash collection on July 1, the first day of the new fiscal year, according to The Herald News.

Correia last month signed an expected 10-year contract to privatize trash hauling with EZ Disposal Service. A total of 24 city workers had been notified they would be laid off when the private company began service.

According to The Herald News, payments to EZ Disposal will escalate from $3.3 million the first year to $5.1 million in year 10. •
