Fan vote eliminates thimble from Monopoly

PROVIDENCE – The thimble game piece will no longer be included in future editions of Hasbro Inc.’s Monopoly board game, Fortune.com reported on Feb. 16.

The toymaker last month launched a “Monopoly Token Madness” campaign that allowed fans to vote on a mix of the classic eight tokens, as well as new alternatives. With more than 4 million votes cast, Hasbro said the thimble didn’t make the cut.

The company hasn’t yet announced what token will replace it, as final results are due to be revealed in March.

Current tokens that will remain are: Scottie dog, car, battleship, hat, boot, wheelbarrow and cat, which replaced the classic iron token in 2013.

Originally added to the game in 1935, the thimble represented a household object that was a part of day-to-day life in the 1930s when the current version of the board game was first published, Fortune said. •
