Federal EDA official to tour R.I. businesses, look for ways to promote economic growth

PROVIDENCE – A senior official with the U.S. Economic Development Administration will tour several business facilities in Rhode Island Wednesday and meet with business representatives, to identify ways the federal agency can help promote economic growth, according to the office of U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Jay Williams on Wednesday morning is scheduled to attend the Composites Manufacturing Forum in Bristol, an event organized by the R.I. Marine Trades Association and the Rhode Island Composites Alliance.
He then will tour Newport TechWorks, a proposed business incubator that received $1.6 million in federal grants, as well as the Port of Galilee in Narragansett, which received $2.9 million to repair infrastructure required by the $200 million fishing industry.
In the afternoon, Williams will end his daylong visit with a tour of Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown, where he will meet with businesses. The federal EDA has provided several funding initiatives for Quonset in recent years, according to a release from Whitehouse, including $6 million for the Zarbo Avenue Bulkhead and $4 million for the Romano Vineyard Way Bridge.
