Fifty employees from Fidelity Investment’s Rhode Island offices teamed up with Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence members and students from Roger Williams Middle School to build and race solar-electric go-karts at the Center for Dynamic Learning on May 7 for Fidelity Cares Day.
The center’s Engineering Fabrication Laboratory, which is located in the South Side Clubhouse, bustled with anticipation as three teams rapidly assembled solar-electric charging panels to axels and steering wheels.
As the three teams began building at 9:30 a.m., additional employees painted the gymnasium and did landscaping around the clubhouse.
Within a few hours, the go-karts were ready to race along Louisa Street, which was closed to traffic. Every youth involved had the opportunity to test-drive their creation in a relay race that circled a cone approximately 500 yards away.
This project with Fidelity and the Center for Dynamic Learning is a part of the Boys & Girls Clubs’ commitment to STEM learning (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), which provides youth with hands-on exposure to vocational studies. •
