The 18th annual Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival will feature more than 240 films from 62 countries and 34 states and a host of other activities throughout the state from Aug. 5-10. Hosted in the towns of Providence, Newport, Bristol, Woonsocket and Jamestown, the screenings will be of feature length movies as well as documentaries and short films.

The 18th annual Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival will feature more than 240 films from 62 countries and 34 states and a host of other activities throughout the state from Aug. 5-10.

Hosted in Providence, Newport, Bristol, Woonsocket and Jamestown, the screenings will be of feature length movies as well as documentaries and short films.

Tuesday, Aug. 5, is the gala opening night at 7 p.m. at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

Premieres considered to be among the world's finest shorts, curated from thousands of entries, will include the World Premiere of “Caserta Palace Dream,” featuring Richard Dreyfus and directed by James McTeigue, as well as a new music video from children's book author Sandra Boynton.

A “Providence Backlot Tour” of the “downcity” and riverwalk areas of Providence begins in the lobby of the Biltmore Hotel on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. The goal for the tour is “to provide filmmakers with an “insider’s” view of [the city] with an eye toward what would be interesting/unanticipated places for filming,” according to a website description.

The RI Film Forum, scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 7, will be held in collaboration with the RI Film & Television Office and the Harrington School of Communication at the University of Rhode Island. The one-day symposium is meant to connect the state and region’s “movers and shakers” in the field and jumpstart conversations about the state of the industry.

There are also award presentations, activities for youth, including Expanded KidsEye programming, LGBTQ and Two Spirit screenings at statewide locations with panels, workshops and filmmaker mixers.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, The Pell Center at Salve Regina University's Story in the Public Square program and the festival will feature two documentaries, “The War Photographers” and “The Newport Effect” in downtown Newport. A Closing Night Block Party is scheduled at the Dark Lady in downtown Providence.

Tickets are $15 for opening night or $50 for the opening night screening and gala, and $10 for general admission for any single screenings after opening night. Senior, group and student discounts are available with advance purchases.
