Finalists named for UMass president

BOSTON – A Harvard University administrator and a chancellor from within the University of Massachusetts system have been named finalists for the UMass presidency.
The University of Massachusetts announced that a search committee today selected Marty Meehan, the chancellor of UMass Lowell and a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and John A. Quelch, professor of business administration at the Harvard Business School, as finalists.
Quelch is also former dean, vice president and distinguished professor of international management at China Europe International Business School.
The finalists are being considered for the top job in a possible election Friday when the university’s Board of Trustees meets.
“We are impressed by the high caliber of the candidates put forward and appreciate the search committee’s extremely impressive work,” Victor Woolridge, chairman of the UMass Board of Trustees, said. “I look forward to the board bringing this process to a timely and successful conclusion when it meets tomorrow.”
The search committee looking is to replace President Robert L. Caret, who will step down June 30 to become chancellor of the 12-campus University of Maryland system. Committee members called the finalists “outstanding.”
“Both candidates have tremendous leadership capacity and would be transformative leaders for UMass,” said Philip W. Johnston, a UMass Trustee who served on the presidential panel.
Robert J. Manning, chairman of UMass Presidential Search Committee, called the role of the incoming president a “solemn responsibility.
“It is a big job, the stakes are very high, and the members of this search committee should be very proud of the work we have done and of the names we have put forward. We are advancing outstanding candidates eminently capable of leading the institution that will guide Massachusetts into the future,” Manning added.
The search began Feb. 6.
