BOSTON – Even when businesses might consider their online information secure, there’s a chance that hackers have already gotten into their systems, according to Alan Goldsworthy, an executive with RazorThreat, a firm that helps businesses secure their computer networks. Goldsworthy’s comments were during a recent meeting of the Boston chapter of the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Society and were reported in the April 19, 2013 issue of The Standard, a New England insurance weekly.
“We don’t sit and wait for someone to come in. We assume they’re inside the wire,” Goldsworthy said. “There’s an advanced persistent threat, not once a month or twice a year. It’s every day.”
Goldsworthy advised businesses to know what their high value assets are and be aware of all activity on their network. A high value asset for a non-profit might be the credit card numbers of donors, he said.
Most breaches of security, he said, are noticed by a third party, not the actual business that has been breached.
