Just for fun, Jeff Powell smoked fish for 16 years before following advice given by friends and family to do it professionally.

The Ocean State Smoked Fish Co., which smokes locally sourced fish and sells it at stores and farmers markets around the state, was launched this year. Powell, with a culinary background, is currently operating out of the business incubator Hope & Main in Warren, where he can be found often smoking upward of 75 pounds of fish.

Although his smoked salmon is highly popular, Powell wants to feature local produce as much as possible because supporting the Rhode Island trade is important to him.

“I’m a big proponent of putting our dollars back into our local economy,” Powell said.

In an effort to give back to the fishing community, Powell will use a portion of his profits to set up a yearly scholarship fund for students from local fishing families. Powell is trying to build his brand and name recognition, which he says is already catching on with some consumers.

“With the Ocean State Smoked Fish Company [name] I wanted to convey something of the rich … fishing tradition [in Rhode Island],” Powell said. •
