Greg Coupe is a Realtor with Long Realty in the North Scituate village of Scituate, a family-owned real estate agency that is well known for representing owners and buyers in rural Rhode Island communities, including Foster, Glocester, Scituate and Burrillville. The six-agent office was established in 1955. Coupe, a Realtor with the office for 12 years, spoke recently with the Providence Business News about what attracts buyers to small towns in Rhode Island.
PBN: What is the range of the Long Realty listings?
COUPE:
We handle everything from rural land to single-family, to commercial property to condos, all of those types of properties. We do most of our property in [northeastern Rhode Island] but also all across Rhode Island and eastern Connecticut.
PBN: When people are looking for homes in rural areas, what are they looking for?
COUPE:
They want to have the rural aspect of the property. They want to live in single-family areas. They enjoy open space when they buy a house. In Foster, it’s a 4.5-acre lot, roughly. Glocester is 4 acres. Scituate is 3 acres, unless the lot is a pre-existing lot on record, which is before the zoning laws took effect. They want to preserve the rural aspects of those towns. When people are looking at Foster, Glocester, Scituate, they’re looking to have privacy.
PBN: In your experience, are you seeing more people from the cities being interested in moving to these towns?
COUPE:
Yes. People want to have more and more privacy, I’m noticing.
PBN: What type of properties are available?

COUPE: We have anything ranging from $160,000 all the way up to about three-quarters of a million dollars.
PBN: What are the negative aspects of living in a rural, or more remote, community?
COUPE:
Some people have a 40-minute drive [to Providence.] Some people want the drive, to decompress. Some people don’t.
