Jason Viera, director-networking solutions at Carousel Industries of North America Inc., talks about his position at the company, which specializes in communications and network technologies, professional and managed services, and cloud solutions, and how he became interested in the technology field.

PBN: What first attracted you to the tech field?

VIERA: I was very fortunate to grow up in a household where learning and technology were both held in high regard. My mother, a teacher, and father, a programmer (back when Cobol/Fortran ruled the world), instilled in me a strong desire to become a lifelong learner. The notion of being able to communicate with people across the globe and have access to a wealth of information at my fingertips is really what set me on a collision course with technology. While technology has changed drastically over the past 20 years, my passion for keeping up with where things are headed has remained constant.

PBN: How long have you worked at Carousel? What does your job entail?
VIERA:
I’ve been with Carousel for six months. As a technical director for Carousel Industries, I serve as a trusted adviser to customers across multiple vertical industries (health care, manufacturing, finance to name a few) with an emphasis on providing technology solutions which solve business problems. I also play a significant role in the internal development of tomorrow’s business-oriented technology advisers. I still tend to spend a bit of time troubleshooting architectural and design challenges for our customer base.

PBN: There have been a lot of changes announced by Carousel in recent months (acquisition of Atrion, Dallas-based SOURCE) – how do you think these acquisitions will strengthen the company?

VIERA: These strategic acquisitions bring us some very talented professionals and increase both our areas of technical expertise and our geographic footprint. They also enable Carousel to continue delivering differentiated business outcomes for our diverse customer base and help us maintain a pretty aggressive growth rate.

PBN: Were you involved in the work to upgrade technology at First Niagara Center in New York before the 2016 National Hockey League draft? Tell me about that project.

VIERA: I wasn’t involved in this project. However, I can tell you that the large-scale sports and entertainment venue market opportunity is a growing one for Carousel. Beyond First Niagara Center, a number of other customers, including the Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots, are using our services to deliver advanced Wi-Fi to connect with fans and deliver an exceptional game-day experience. It’s very exciting to see.

PBN: Were you surprised to be named a Tech10 Award winner? Why do you think you were chosen? (Viera was recently named an award winner by Tech Collective, the state’s information technology and bioscience association. Awards are given to individuals and companies driving innovation, education and growth in the technology sector in Rhode Island.)

VIERA: Rhode Island has a large concentration of extremely talented technology professionals that service the Northeast and I was pleasantly surprised and quite honored to have been chosen as a Tech10 Award recipient. Hopefully, it was my passion for tying technology to business outcomes that ultimately lead to my selection for the award.
