Five banks sponsor high school financial literacy program

WESTPORT – Westport High School’s junior class is scheduled to take part in the Credit for Life Fair on April 11, supported by BayCoast Bank, Mechanics Cooperative Bank, Sovereign Bank and Westport Federal Credit Union.

The three-hour program simulates the financial responsibilities and daily living decisions of an independent 25-year-old. Created by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, Credit for Life Fair has been recognized nationally for its interactive approach to teaching the basics of budgeting and managing credit.

Through the exercise students learn about housing costs, insurance premiums, transportation expenses and the importance of saving for retirement. In addition to the efforts of the five financial institutions, volunteers from the community are helping put on the Credit for Life Fair.
