Focusing on right market is the secret to growth

American Partners Inc., a technology staffing company based in Pawtucket, is one of the state’s fastest-growing companies in the annual revenue category of $25 million to $75 million, and at the rate it is going, it could shoot into a higher revenue slot in no time.
The firm was founded in 2007 and posted revenue of $4 million that year. It hit $30 million last year and is on pace to earn $38 million this year, said President Thomas Leonard. Looked at another way, the company’s growth can be traced from the first two employees to today’s 27.
The growth is attributable to “staying in your lane; finding niche markets where you can excel; and staying focused on where we are good,” Leonard said.
Success comes from “hiring the right people” to do the job and “the commitment to training those people.” Leonard added, “We put so much time and effort into hiring and training. We train as a company four days a week.”
Asked if the rapid growth surprised him, Leonard said, “I think we were really focusing on making a name for ourselves and being the best at what we did. The growth came a lot quicker than we expected; we were just trying to find the right market.” The result was a business that is growing at a remarkable rate, despite its start in the Great Recession.
“Anytime you have that kind of growth, you have to have the right market conditions,” Leonard said. “And a little luck has to play into that.” •
