Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island recently donated $10,000 to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank during the nonprofit’s Holiday Meal Drive Open House. The donation will allow the Food Bank to acquire 32,000 pounds of food, bringing it closer to its goal of collecting 350,000 pounds of food between Nov. 9 and Dec. 30.
“Most of us think of the holidays as a time of plenty, but many people in Rhode Island are struggling to put food on the table,” said Rhode Island Community Food Bank CEO Andrew Schiff. “We want to be sure that all families have a good holiday meal, but even more importantly, we want to focus on helping families to have nutritious food every day of the month.”
During the open house, visitors returned their “Nothing” campaign cans with spare change donations. In addition, the Food Bank also received a carload of food donations from First Lady Stephanie Chafee, who stayed to tour the facility and help sort food donations. U.S. Sen. Jack Reed also attended the event. •
