Food bank, foundation team up

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank and the Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation contributed volunteer manpower and sorted 12,500 pounds of food while packing 1,500 pounds for distribution earlier this month.
The food bank joined the Feeding America network of food banks across the country for the foundation’s second annual National Week of Service from Aug. 3 to 7. Approximately 70 events took place nationwide.
Throughout the week, Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins franchisees collaborated with local hunger-relief organizations, like the food bank, to support efforts to help feed those in need. In Rhode Island, supporters sorted, inspected and packed donated food, which will be distributed through the network of 169 food assistance agencies and into the community. More than 40 Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees and representatives volunteered at the food bank on Aug. 6, for instance.
“Support from the Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation means a great deal,” said Andrew Schiff, CEO of the food bank. “We rely on the generosity and involvement of the business community to feed everyone in need.”
The food bank provides food to 60,000 Rhode Islanders in need of food assistance each month. The summer months can be an especially difficult time for families, children and seniors who face hunger, since free school meals are unavailable, additional childcare is often needed and higher temperatures affect utility costs.
“Community is at the heart of our business,” said Karen Raskopf, chief of communications at Dunkin’ Brands and co-chairperson for the foundation. “We are excited to join together to make a positive difference in the neighborhoods where our franchisees and employees live and serve our guests.”
