PROVIDENCE – Brown University has been named to Forbes’ 2014 list of the most entrepreneurial universities in the country, joining startup breeding grounds such as Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology.

The 2014 list, Forbes’ second to date, ranked the nation’s research universities based on the percentage of alumni and students who have identified themselves as founders and business owners on LinkedIn.

Unsurprisingly, Stanford claimed the No. 1 spot on the list, renowned as the alma mater of dropout-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google, Jerry Yang and David Filo of Yahoo, and Evan Spiegel of Snapchat, among others.

MIT was the entrepreneurial runner-up, followed by the University of California Berkeley, Cornell University and the University of California Los Angeles.

Brown University ranked at No. 7, moving up from its previous ranking at No. 13 on the 2012 Forbes list. Forbes did not compile a “most entrepreneurial colleges” list for 2013. Among Brown’s notable alumni are Tom First and Tom Scott, the founders of Nantucket Nectars beverage company.
