EAST PROVIDENCE – Former University of Rhode Island President Robert L. Carothers is joining the Big Brothers of Rhode Island board of directors, the nonprofit announced Monday.

Carothers, who served as URI president from 1991 to 2009, will volunteer his experience in fundraising and organizational development, as well as his leadership skills, during his tenure on the board of directors.

“I’m ecstatic that Bob is eager to dedicate his time and expertise in fundraising and organizational development here,” Steve Kass, BBRI executive director, said in prepared remarks.

“We have gained momentum, gained additional big brothers for our boys, and now we have a great opportunity to create a stronger foundation, financially and structurally,” said Kass, adding: “On a personal level, I’ve known Bob for years, and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

According to the nonprofit’s release, Carothers is known for having increased enrollment, diversity and enhanced support at all URI levels. “He brings resources that reflect the organization’s short- and long-term goals,” said the release.

BBRI said that initial plans include expanding its current database, determining specific levels of interest within the community and exploring new sources of financial support.
