The Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs Foundation recently donated an aerial ladder truck to the Rhode Island Fire Academy. The truck was acquired through Municibid, an online government auction website similar to eBay.
The truck – a 1989 Maxim with 23,000 miles – will be used to help with the education and training of firefighters at the academy’s new Exeter campus where hands-on training programs are conducted. Approximately 1,400 participants are currently enrolled in programs at the campus, Mark Pare, executive director of the Rhode Island Fire Academy, told Providence Business News.
“An aerial ladder is a crucial part of training firefighters,” said Pare. “This will become a signature piece in their training. It’s something every recruit will work with.”
The foundation spent $6,399 on the truck, which was designated as surplus equipment by the Middletown Fire Department, which placed the equipment up for bid. •
