Foundation giving grants in Newport County

The Rhode Island Foundation is offering more than $160,000 in annual grants to Newport County nonprofits who meet grant criteria.
The deadline to apply is Feb. 20.
The Newport County Fund, a fund managed by the foundation, offers awards of up to $10,000 in eight key funding areas: arts and culture, children and families, education, economic security, environment, health, housing and basic human needs.
Among the eligible uses are project-development support for new programs, strengthening or expanding established community programs or services and community or municipal planning or leadership.
Applicants should demonstrate focus on a significant problem or opportunity, strategic partnerships or collaboration, innovation in approach or project design and measurable results.
“This fund is focused on serving the unique needs of these communities to help address specific topics within a particular community or multiple communities,” said Adrian Bonéy, the Foundation’s grant maker for special programs.
The fund does not fund individuals or scholarships, capital or endowment efforts, medical research, debt reduction or fundraising events. However, grants may support faith-based organizations for secular programs or projects.
Newport County residents including Kristen Humphrey, Victoria Johnson, John Murphy and John Trifero comprise the Foundation’s advisory committee, which will help award the grants.
Since 2002, the fund has invested more than $2.6 million in programs and services for residents of Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth and Tiverton.
