PROVIDENCE – Tech Collective, Rhode Island’s bioscience and IT industry association, has announced the four winners of its second annual Rhode Island Bioscience Awards.

An awards ceremony to honor the four “bioscience champions” in the areas of consulting and testing, digital health and education will take place on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln.

The 2014 Bioscience Awards individual winners are:

  • John D. Jarrell, president of Materials Science Associates and founder of BioIntraface Inc.

  • Greg Paquette, professor and director of biotechnology programs at the University of Rhode Island.

  • Dr. Megan L. Ranney, director of the Emergency Digital Health Innovation program and assistant professor of emergency medicine at Rhode Island Hospital/Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

This year, in addition to honoring individual bioscience professionals and entrepreneurs, Tech Collective also recognized David R. Vito with its community-leadership award for an individual, organization or company advancing the bioscience industry through advocacy, education and mentorship, workforce development or youth engagement.

Vito is an assistant professor of biology at the Community College of Rhode Island and coordinator of the Amgen Biotech Experience Program at URI.

“Tech Collective is proud to recognize John, Greg, Megan and David as its 2014 Rhode Island Bioscience Award winners,” said Kathie Shields, executive director of Tech Collective. “From company growth and innovation to an increased number of services and supporting programs to foster this industry, Rhode Island’s foothold in the biosciences is growing and strengthening. This year’s award winners are some of the industry innovators and leaders who are driving the biosciences forward in our state, and we are so proud to honor their diligence, passion and success.”

Tech Collective had initially called for applications in four categories for the 2014 Bioscience Awards – the individual and community leadership awards as well as awards for breakthrough products or innovations at local startups and enterprises. Since several applicants in the individual awards category scored higher than those in the startup product and enterprise product categories, however, Tech Collective ultimately decided to honor the applicants with the highest scores rather than presenting an award to one person or product in each category, according to Tech Collective spokeswoman Giselle Mahoney.

The Aug. 28 awards celebration will take place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Kirkbrae Country Club, located at 197 Old River Road in Lincoln. Tickets cost $45 for Tech Collective members and $55 for general attendance.
