FREETOWN – Voters in Freetown overwhelmingly voted against a nonbinding referendum regarding the $167 million casino off Route 140 proposed by the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Aquinnah, according to the Taunton Daily Gazette.

Citizens of Freetown voted 954 against and 308 for the casino, according to unofficial results reported by the news source. Roughly 22 percent of registered voters cast a ballot.

A spokesman for the tribe stressed that the vote was nonbinding and that the rejection from the voters did not mean the tribe would withdraw its interest in Freetown.

The Wampanoag’s entered into a purchase-and-sales agreement for 500 acres straddling the Freetown-Lakeville line, according to the Gazette.

Lakeville, Mass. voters will weigh in on the casino referendum on Saturday.
