Fresh air for R.I. economy

One of the true joys of Providence Business News’ recognition programs is the sense of discovery that comes every time we start the judging process.

In those instances for which I am involved in the judging, I take home a large binder (or two) filled with applications, recommendations, the details of individuals’ careers and companies’ business.

And what strikes me every time I do that is just how much talent there is in Rhode Island that is not as well-known as it should be.

I’m sure that some of those companies don’t mind, but collectively we all should. It’s easy to make snap generalizations about the Ocean State’s economy, ones that often are not accurate at all. But it takes time to get to know the individual stories. And so, our programs give us that opportunity, one that I am so happy to have.

Well-known success stories such as Edesia, Hope Valley Industries and AstroNova prove that good ideas and hard work are valued in the market. But who knew just how trend-setting Parmatech-Proform and Red Hed Manufacturing Inc. were? Tanury Industries traces its roots back to the heyday of costume jewelry in Rhode Island, but it has reinvented itself and is more relevant than ever.

And yes, John Hazen White Jr. is well-known throughout the region for his strongly held opinions and personal style, but he is as forward-looking and accomplished a leader as any. We did not go out on a limb in selecting the third-generation leader of Taco Comfort Solutions as our Strategic Leadership Award winner.

So as you read about this year’s Manufacturing Awards honorees, know that despite what is not right with the Ocean State’s economy, there is so much that is.

We are once again thankful for the support for this program provided by our sponsors. Polaris MEP is the presenting sponsor once again, while our partner sponsors are Blum Shapiro; Cox Business; Gallo/Thomas Insurance; and Hope Global. Media partner is AM790.
