Fugate deserves planning credit

To the Editor:

I was glad to see Providence Business News recognize Grover Fugate’s prudent stewardship of Rhode Island’s natural resources and leadership as executive director of the R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council (“Learn and take action today for tomorrow,” Feb. 8, 2016).

Mr. Fugate has earned national recognition for Rhode Island’s Ocean Special Area Management Plan, led by CRMC and the University of Rhode Island, now a national model for marine planning.

The bold groundwork laid by that process helped Rhode Island speed past neighboring states to develop our first-in-the-nation offshore wind farm. Those massive steel structures going into the water show that Rhode Island can still make big things. And thanks to that project, we’ll be powering a cleaner, more resilient Ocean State.
