Fundraiser benefits domestic-violence awareness

WAKEFIELD – Be Fit Nutrition hosted a monthlong fundraiser to support Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which benefited the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County.

“Domestic violence is a very real and very dangerous epidemic, which has claimed the lives of 10 Rhode Islanders already in 2013,” said Mary Roda, executive director of the center. “Thousands of people every year – mostly women and children – need our emergency hotline, safe shelter, court advocacy, counseling, and other services.”

Rhode Island’s nationally recognized “KNOW MORE / NO MORE Domestic Violence” October campaign educated people about recognizing the signs of domestic violence and helped teach safe intervention techniques for bystanders.

“When we heard about the NO MORE campaign, we knew we had to get involved,” said Cindy Paiva, one of the organizers of this event. “Be Fit Nutrition is a social club with the purpose of educating others about the importance of good health and nutrition in a fun and energetic environment. And we also believe in healthy relationships!”

During the “Shake It Up For a Cause” fundraiser, customers could purchase their nutritional shake in a NO MORE reusable cup or buy raffle tickets to win a basket of products. Be Fit Nutrition made a matching donation for all money raised, donating a total of $502 to the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County.

Be Fit Nutrition co-owners Cindy Paiva, Stephanie Paiva, Rhonda Swain, and Melanie Lawhead actively work to improve the Wakefield/Narragansett community through healthy living and delicious, nutritional shakes. Visit them at 10A Pier Marketplace in Narragansett, or call 401-788-0300.
