PROVIDENCE – First it was America’s favorite city, now it’s the coolest.

Providence has earned the title of “coolest city” from GQ magazine, just nine months after Travel + Leisure named it America’s favorite city.

GQ, in its June issue, lauds Providence for always punching “above its weight in terms of smarts and creativity,” but notes that it has added a few more “bullet points to its resume – like a celebrated food scene and a high-style party hotel – that cement its rep as the coolest city you haven’t been to. Yet.”

The men’s magazine cites specific places to visit, including Birch for dinner, Nicks on Broadway for breakfast and E&O Tap for dive-bar enthusiasts. It also recommends a stroll through Swan Point Cemetery, where writer H.P. Lovecraft is buried, and a visit to the Rhode Island School of Design museum.
And, it recommends the Dean Hotel, “the GQ-iest place (by far) to stay” in the city. The magazine makes note of the Dean’s seedy past as a strip club, and praises its “dark and velvety” Magdalenae Room.
“It’s like the whole town is screaming in hedonistic chorus, ‘LOOK HOW SEXY WE’RE GETTING’,” the article states.
