SOUTH KINGSTOWN – About 450 girls from 29 local high schools and career centers will converge on the University of Rhode Island on Thursday, March 13, to explore STEM career paths during Tech Collective’s 13th annual GRRL Tech event.
Girls Reaching Remarkable Levels is an interactive technology expo in which female students are exposed to opportunities in the science, technology, engineering and math fields through hands-on workshops.
During the event, students will attend their choice of two out of 23 woman-taught workshops covering topics ranging from bioscience, animal science and oceanography to engineering, physics and computer science.
Keynote speaker Ruthe Farmer, director of strategic initiatives for the National Center for Women and Information Technology, also spoke at last year’s GRRL Tech event, which was attended by more than 470 high school girls.
“We need the contribution of girls’ technical minds in order to build the most innovative solutions to solve the global challenges we face as a society,” Farmer said during her speech at the 2013 event. “We can only dream of the innovative solutions we’ll see when women are equally represented as designers and creators of technology.”
The GRRL Tech Scholarship Committee will select between three and five GRRL Tech attendees to receive four-year, $4,000 tuition scholarships to attend URI, on the basis of essay submissions. The winners will be announced at the end of the expo.
