GTECH unveils 217th computer lab

PROVIDENCE – GTECH, in partnership with the Providence Community Library, recently celebrated the 217th GTECH After School Advantage computer lab at the Washington Park Community Library.
Representatives from GTECH and local dignitaries, including Rhode Island Senator Harold Metts, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, Providence City Councilman Luis Aponte, and Providence Community Library Board President Mark McKenney joined youth and members of the community to reveal the new $15,000 lab at the ribbon cutting.
“GTECH’s efforts to provide technology and other educational resources during the after-school hours have benefitted many children and organizations in our city,” said Providence Mayor Angel Taveras. “I thank GTECH for its continuing efforts to support our community libraries. These computers will assist children and patrons of all ages.”
As part of the donation, the Washington Park Community Library received eight Dell flat-panel desktop computers, student workstations, chairs, assorted educational and creative software, as well as additional furniture for the children’s area. These resources offer children a safe haven during after-school hours, as well as help provide the necessary skills needed to complete homework assignments and much more.
“GTECH is proud to continue our partnership … by donating this computer lab to the Washington Park Library,” said GTECH Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs Robert K. Vincent. “The company appreciates the opportunity to support the youth of our capital city and we will continue to work to ensure the well-being of students throughout Providence.”
The event marked the eighth computer lab opening as part of GTECH’s partnership with the library, which was established in 2009. Knight Memorial Community Library, Smith Hill Community Library, Olneyville Community Library, Fox Point Community Library, Mt. Pleasant Community Library, Wanskuck Community Library, and Rochambeau Community Library are among those libraries that have received computer lab donations, courtesy of GTECH’s After School Advantage program. Computers, educational software, chairs, and workstations were provided to all donation recipients.
“We are delighted that, thanks to the generosity of GTECH, eight of PCL’s nine libraries now have these terrific children’s computer labs,” said Providence Community Library Board President Mark McKenney. “GTECH’s promise to the children and adult patrons of the Washington Park Library has been fulfilled and the entire community will benefit from this wonderful gift.”
Providence Community Library is a non-profit organization that manages the Providence library system for the benefit of the whole community. The library also offers a range of educational programs for children and teens during the after-school hours.
