Gamm gets Shakespeare grant

PAWTUCKET – The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre has won a $25,000 Shakespeare in American Communities grant to perform its Season 31 production of “The Winter’s Tale” next spring for at least 10 area middle and high schools.
The award will also pay for accompanying educational activities including in-school residencies, workshops, and post-performance discussions from April 21 through May 29 of 2016.
This is The Gamm’s second award, having received the same grant to support education efforts surrounding its 2014 production of “Macbeth.”
“This grant is both an amazing opportunity to expand and deepen our commitment to our public schools and a hard-earned acknowledgement of the quality reputation that The Gamm has developed over many seasons, particularly with our long-term focus on Shakespeare,” Gamm Artistic Director Tony Estrella said.
Shakespeare in American Communities, now in its 13th year, is a national program managed by Arts Midwest in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Arts Midwest is so proud to once again partner with the National Endowment for the Arts to support the activities of 40 outstanding theater companies that will bring Shakespeare’s plays alive for students across the country,” said Susan Chandler, vice president of Arts Midwest. “Shakespeare in American Communities’ goals of introducing students to the art form of theater and to Shakespeare’s timeless themes of love, ambition, jealousy, courage, and betrayal will be brilliantly executed by these theaters.”
